WIP Currently working on simplifying shapes and marks in oil – I keep overworking…so painted the dogs (a lot) yesterday and then wiped and repainted the landscape watercolour from Sunday into oil.
When I get a wet paint brush in my hand (with watercolour or ink) my painting process kicks in automatically and the brush becomes an extension of me. I don’t think about whether I am drawing or painting – I think it’s probably somewhere in between. When I pick up a brush with oil on the end it’s as though I’ve never painted before. So much to learn, evolve and develop in my work here – and so very motivating! 🎨😊
The clue is in the name…’water-colour’…A regular phrase I use when teaching…..(Apologies to all I’ve taught/bored saying that!😉) Here are some suitably ‘wet’ watercolours made in Oxfordshire with Royal Talens watercolour which so suits the weather conditions this Spring! (They are transplanted into my mini watercolour travel palette) Thank you @royaltalensuk for the mention in your post on Instagram. I have really noticed the difference in the quality of pigment in your paints which compliments my treatment of watercolour here where the separation of the colour, in the water, is all part of the process. (You can see that separation in the detail shots further on in the post). #pleinair @britpleinair #watercolour #watercolor #Oxford #Oxfordshire #fields #flood #wetfields
The scale of these natural shapes beside these architectural ones is imposing. Even on the brightest Winter days, wet works on paper refuse to dry outside – and our current weather is less than helpful – so some finishing off indoors in necessary. #pleinair #ink #sketch #watercolour #georgianarchitecture #thecircusbath #Bath #londonplanetree @bathartfair @britpleinair @winsorandnewton @moleskine @royaltalensuk
I always enjoy #tbt so here goes…last year I spent some time painting on the Isle of Skye. I wanted very much to work near the Old Man of Storr and walked up twice to try to do so; the first day I was driven off by awful hail (and 100% soaked) and the next day despite having set off in sun I was suddenly enveloped in snow. I did manage a plein air grubby glove sketch with pencil on paper but it was safer to get down off the hill. Recently I used the sketch, video and my memory of the atmosphere to paint this ink #theisleofskye #ink #Scotland #throwbackthursday #oldmanofstorr #pleinair @schoolhouseforart @bathartfair @paintersonline @winsorandnewton @britpleinair #snow #mountains
Exploring Bath with my A3 sketchbook yesterday- enjoyed chatting with the friendly locals (Hi! to all I gave cards to😉)
The first sketch, is one of my all time favourite views in Bath during the Winter; looking through the trees in #thecircusbath
I’ve got new ink work planned as I’ve been lucky to pick up a reserve place @bathartfair in late Feb 😊 (really excited to take part!) and my previous work in Bath is sold. Better get back there with my ink ASAP!

This picture says it all – probably my busiest Hampshire Open Studios days ever for me yesterday. This is my 6th year. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME. I was too busy hosting to paint!
The flowers were a bit dead yesterday, I wonder if I’ll get anywhere near finishing it today before they completely die, or whether I’ll be wiping the board as a failure. 🤞It’s a failure and I have lots more guests today 😊THIS YEAR I have the option to buy a PRINT of my work if the original out of range. They are pre order-able….so ask me more when you come! ☕️🚽August 18-22nd. 10-5pm NB 11-8pm on 22nd. East Street in Fareham. It’s been a busy year! Almost as busy as this bee on my hollyhocks ! I put these pictures in my window today. Hanging is hung …..today! (video PV’s soon!)
One of the good things for me about Hampshire Open Studios, is the opportunity to take stock and see where I am and the things that have happened in the preceding year; both as events and as developments in my work. What mostly strikes me is how busy and well travelled I’ve been this year! Directly after last year’s Open Studios we went to Northern Spain ⛰🏖🥂(back there soon so watch this space..!), done battle with self portraits👩🏻🎨and the #zornpalette over the winter , been to Rome 😘, ‘residented’ in Aspexgallery, Scotland 🥾🥾and the Isle of Skye🏔🏕, spent time with my friends in my Lymington ⛵️and The Art Academy in London 🎨 (for two different things!), been a judge at Pintar Rapido in Chelsea 🙏 🐩🐕🐾, painted in Dorset with @britpleinair, been to Somerset and visited with @david_a_parfitt_ri 🖼, I’ve been to my first proper art fair in Newbury 🐎, walked, camped and painted in beautiful Arundel 🏰, and have an exhibition in the Mall Galleries to look forward to ….Ahhh!!! There are a few bits and bobs still to do – but I’m mostly ready. Hampshire Open Studios is next week!!!! starting week Saturday – Please come along and see all about it! ☕️🚽August 17-22nd. 10-5pm NB 11-8pm on 22nd. East Street in Fareham. Time for a #timelapse Still wet as you can see! We (my students and myself) made small watercolour studies on Saturday @theartacademylondon – Asparagus is a particularly good subject matter where the wetness of the Watercolour can be exploited to carry the colour variations of the paint up the stems. Remember guys “the clue’s in the name – ‘watercolour’! ” My photography needs some refinement…seems to be mostly inverted but you get the idea. Really liking the change in my paint brand, I can see a big difference in the pigment quality; so a big thanks to Royal Talens for this travel set. #watercolour #watercolor @royaltalensuk @royaltalens @moleskine #Asparagus #stilllife #observationalart ##rembrandtwatercolor #rembrandtwatercolour
*I’m doing Hampshire Open Studios very soon. Please come along! August 17-22nd. 10-5pm NB 11-8pm on 22nd. East Street in Fareham. PO16 0BW DM for more info or find @hantsopenstudios http://www.hampshireopenstudios.org.uk #hampshireopenstudios2019
After MyStory post this morning where there was a time-lapse flash of sketches made in The Town Hall in #Chelsea I was asked to post the sketch – so in true #TBT #throwbackthursday tradition here it is. I’m looking forward to seeing the hall after it’s closure and revamp this weekend for @pintar_rapido. I’ll be painting for fun, as I can’t compete. Who’s coming??
Been playing with some new Watercolour the last few days between making coffee for external decorators!….anyway they are rather nice! The watercolours that is….decorators very well behaved! #watercolor #watercolour #beetroot #peonies #pomegranate @royaltalensuk #observationalart #stilllife
Well it was a sad farewell to Aspex’s great studio space yesterday. I made the most of trying to fill it in the 5 days I was there!! These sketchbooks are A3 and A4….and full Imperial watercolour sheets – some joined. I enjoy exploring scale and it was great to have a large floor space to work on. Lots incomplete and plenty to keep me busy in the future! #portsmouth #ink #camberdock #fishingboat @aspexportsmouth @moleskine @winsorandnewton @st_cuthberts_mill
Two good (by which I mean things I found especially interesting ) sketches first thing….then back to Aspex…..#watercolour #watercolor #ink #sketch @moleskine #portsmouth #Hampshire @seawhiteofbrighton @seawhiteshowroom
Some sketching to kick the day off to my second day at Aspex Gallery in Portsmouth as artist in residence. Really enjoying the space in more ways than one! Thank you Aspex! @aspexportsmouth @winsorandnewton @moleskine @seawhiteofbrighton #camberdocks @gunwharfquays @gunwharfquaysmarina #artistresidency
Sat in the #imperialforum #rome for a drawing….you can see the bench I sat on from above….the Imperial Forum was specially open today and free! Lovely to get down from the road level to see all the extra things and then pass under the road via ancient cellars and rooms and pop out at The Forum! #forum

Having a review! I knew that self portraiture had captured my interest – but seeing most of my efforts laid out in the hall – all 29 of them – is really a bit alarming!! And scary. Good to focus on one thing for a while though. #ink #watercolour #watercolor #saunderswaterford #mirrorselfie #selfportrait #workonpaper #profilepictures #profile #oilpainting #workingfromlife #portrait #drawing #zornpalette @st_cuthberts_mill @winsorandnewton
Only time for a quick watercolour play in my sketchbook today in #Bath ….in one of my favourite spots #thecircus A lovey grey day with a stripe of gold in the sky. @moleskine #watercolor #sketch #sketchbook #Somerset #londonplanetree #georgianarchitecture
This time next week I shall be setting up for a very informal ‘Works In Progress’ Open Studio Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December 10-5pm 🎨….lots to show and share from the Autumn…find out about my newest work…seasonal shopping opportunity🎄…and a chance to find out about my exciting plans for 2019!….and have a coffee☕️! ….What’s not to like? If you can’t make that some of my work from Jane Austen’s House Museum and Hampshire Cultural Trust will be in Winchester Museum from December 5th (more on that another time)…..or contact me for a PV at my studio another time if you can’t make the weekend 🙏 Hope to see you soon!
A trip to see the clever cheerful work of @hollyfrean “Holly’s Ark” in Zimmer Stuart Gallery in Arundel on a chilly day! 😍A mooch round the many interesting shops…..and a quick watercolour sketch or two by the castle where a striking avenue of autumn trees and colour, reflected in the moat….with some ducks.
One from the other evening…and we’ve had some beautiful ones recently. It was time to leave so I just did Ink very quickly….obviously this scene is screaming watercolour but there wasn’t time. #BeaulieuHeath #ink #WNinktober #inktober #Hampshire #pleinair @britpleinair @winsorandnewton @seawhiteofbrighton #trees #sunset #Autumn

I look forward to renewing my acquaintance with you all in November!
In the few quiet moments during the event I have had a chance to explore sharing my work (with those who couldn’t make it in person) in a virtual way; online and in #timelapse . The time lapses have proved popular – so here is a short clip from a real time video. Which do you prefer?

#watercolour #sketching #speedsketching #pink #peony #flowers #blooms #Tesco I’m not really a pink person but these are so vibrant. They are only singles…still waiting for the double flowers with the fab middles to be in the shops.
Friday @ #sindlesfarm in the fabulous #sun making speedy evening #sketches #60seconds and #90seconds #watercolour and #sketchbook in my #SeawhiteOfBrighton and #Moleskine books and a #morning #ShepherdsHut view. My #Thursday students @TheArtAcademy were speedily sketching for 15 and 4 minutes this week, so thought I’d join them for 60 and 90 seconds in #watercolour !
#watercolour #sketching #peony #flowers #blooms I bought some marked down peonies in #Tesco again this year….it must be #Summer. These are pale and #scented but I’m looking forward to the lipstick pink ones hitting the shops as they have fabulous centres; I painted them last year.
Thank you to #FairOakArtAndCraftSociety for inviting me to #demonstrate on Wednesday evening using #ink I used my #sketchbook #drawings from my recent trip to #Snowdonia and walk up the #mountain routes of #GlyderFach #GlyderFawr #Tryfan #Eryri #YrWyddfa #BritPleinAir #watercolour #Wales and used my favourite #HPpaper #SaundersWaterford @StCuthbertsMill from my favourite #sketchbooks @moleskine

I’ve ONLY JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS!! Many thanks for selecting me Cass Art! Apologies I’ve not responded sooner – but no one had let me know – but having said that – rather like a late Christmas present 😊
#Sketching #Architecture #GeorgianArchitecture #drawing #ink #Fareham #Hampshire A small drawing from today in ink. I took my watercolours and ink out locally in the old #HighStreet. Dull/bright/dull/damp….#BritishSummer
This Blog was written in very cold February….how different the weather is today....😉
Even in a warm house it has taken the better part of the day to work up some of the washes and dry them on these peices. I have my initial work and sketchbook images to work from – incidentally NO PHOTOGRAPHS – but they will all be double checked on site too for colour and tonal values. I can’t work from photos – it just doesn’t work for me. There’s not enough reference. I’m not clever enough.
Gum Arabic washes have helped me build up the luminosity of the colour and depth of the ink without muddying the colours.
#watercolour #seawhiteshowroom #SeawhiteOfBrighton #WatercolourPaper #teaching #WatercolourAndInk #value #ColourTheory Getting to grips with applying simple colour theory with primary, secondary and complimentary colours last night here in #Hampshire in my Watercolour and Ink group. Still a chance to join us – catch up session possible!
Table top watercolour. Start of the day Tuesday 31st January.
Thinking about the writing table top.
Beginning again with colour mixing, wet in wet, dry brushes, mark making with tools to show the marks! and looking at darkest and lightest tones on the surface in my sketchbook prior to a larger piece. I could do with time to edit images but am anxious to get on with work.
The end of a special first week here in Chawton, where Jane Austen’s house is my base for a unique commission with Hampshire Cultural Trust and the Museum itself. It is a great honour to be in the house as it marks 200 years since Jane Austen’s death.
Posts about this will be few and far between, so we can save the surprise of what I am doing for them!
But many thanks to all at the house and look forward to seeing you again!
Ps I don’t have enough hands for a selfie with my sketchbook!
Looking forward to this years Spice Island Art Trail in Old Portsmouth !!!! 9 days to go! – and I managed a quick drawing of my venue when we all met for a planning meeting today. Come along and meet me, and my fellow exhibitors in the Royal Naval and Royal Albrt Yatch Club, in Old Portsmouth and join the free trail to the other two venues too. Hope to see you soon!
Take a look at the website for full event details.
