And so as today is #throwbackthursday #tbt I’ve watched lots of you guys painting in beautiful Venice this Summer and it has made me recall my first trip there at 16/17?!!! (C1988) #wasieverthatyoung ? which was just prior to my A level Art and Design exam and I painted (can’t find that) photographed and printed in a darkroom (still got those) and drew (here it is)! from my trip….(and it was a very long coach trip from Aberaeron, West Wales indeed! ) and then submitted my Venetian inspired A level art. What strikes me most though…ink…mark making…tonal…structured…structural…composition broken by verticals…architecture…!!!! it’s all there. All the things that I still think about. All the things that define my artwork. Here is Venice at A level – from a photo…and Wellington Square Gardens – Pintar Rapido – from life. Of course then there was a very long gap whilst I was a Primary teacher and Mum. Anyone else got an historical parallel? I’d love to see. Please share 🤫 #noonelsewillknow ! #Venice #StMarksSquare #ink #inktober #WNinktober #Aberaeron #Wales #Ceredigion #wellingtonSquareGardens #KingsRoad #Chelsea #London #Alevelart #PintarRapido
Such a great but long day yesterday. I even fell asleep on the train home! Kept my sticky badge as proof that I really am in this exhibition. Thank you to all involved and great to meet everyone. #RSMA #royalsocietyofmarineartists @Mall_Galleries #boats #Sea #coast #Topsham #Devon #barge #pleinair @britpleinair #inktober #wninktober
Currently on @MallGalleries the @helpforheroes Creative Force exhibition which I was lucky to see and squeeze into my London trip yesterday. Here are the things that caught my eye – sketchbooks (because that’s one of my things too) interesting fabric (I sew and like these two fabric offerings) and a smile to finish on this worked wood bench. How clever to take a downturned mouth shaped piece of wood and see the natural wood knots with a smiley face! See it if you can – sorry I’m not sure if date’s – or buy something online to support this helpful project 🙏 #creativeforce #creativity #helpforheroes
Delighted to receive this photo from a Landscape Artist of the Year viewer today- a photo of my two exhibition pieces in the Kyffin Williams Drawing Prize Exhibition 2018. If you can’t get to Oriel Ynys Môn on Anglesey, maybe you can get to Windsor Castle, where En Plein Air takes place on Saturday? My first time there. Come and say hi!

Good morning all! Another day of @hampshire_open_studios in #Fareham Many thanks to visitors yesterday and of course buyers especially 😍. So sorry if I missed you in the afternoon as I slipped out early to see #stereophonics and @feederofficial and @jakebugg 😱at #victorius. All excellent artists in musical terms not sure if they draw too or not? I’m here all day today and tomorrow. See you soon I hope x
All ready for my first day of @hantsopenstudios in #Fareham. Looking forward to meeting everyone….in fact I met a few yesterday (while I was setting up) who arrived early in error….one an amazing lady of 92 who gained her Art BA at the age of 74!Don’t worry if you are a little more ordinary than that – all welcome!
Thanks for a fun weekend @pintarrapido and great to spend time with all the other artists. Here are my two both on 55x75cm sheets of watercolour paper. Thank goodness for my golfing umbrella- just about kept everything dry. Thanks too @DalerRowney @Aandlmagazine @CASSART See you next year #pleinair #britpleinair #ChelseaTownHall #KingsRoad.
Yesterday I taught my first Watercolour and Ink session in London at The Art Academy. What a fun bunch you were! The day flew. We explored tone and building areas of washes with still life subject matter. And had a small introduction to the work of Richard Diebenkorn.
Here’s another look at the photo of suggested brushes you will need.
If you can’t get to London I will be teaching Art Basics again in Hampshire on Monday! In both groups next week we will be exploring colour.
Well this is where my two worlds collide! Sketching the only Royal Marine memorial in London, which sits directly outside the Mall Galleries….which was my next stop yesterday as I went to see the fabulous RIO exhibition which is currently showing!
Really enjoyed seeing work by Adam Ralston, Maria Rose, Helen Davison, Tom Stevenson, Andrew Farmer, Michael Weller, Haidee-Jo Summers (bought charity cards😉) and Tim Benson…. (wanted to touch the texture of his paint but behaved myself!)
Really excited to be getting to know the work of Julia Hawkins (thinking she might be a reincarnation of several magnificent French impressionists all rolled into one), John Walsom (tug👍🏼), Amanda Coleman (Iced Bun 👌), Helen Lloyd-Elliot, John Dobbs, Sarah Spence (how did she paint those scones without eating them?), Kate Giles, Rosie Copeland, Roger Ferrin, Rosalie Watkins, Aiden Hornby….. So much great stuff and artists to search out on social media platforms and keep me inspired in 2017!
I’ve been updating my website and I came across this photo – small quick drawings made from the train, developed in oil paint on cereal box cardboard…..a surprisingly nice thing to paint onto. Of course – not a museum quality surface….but unlikely my work will need to last that long….and its free! Note to self – must do more.
I’ve been really enjoying some drawing out and about lately with a very soft pencil. Sometimes it has to be very quick and at other times you get a bit longer. eg when your models are trapped on the plane!
Included are…..St Katherine’s Dock at night, Waterloo Station entrance at rush hour, view from a window at Premier Inn, rear view on the plane and preparatory sketches for larger pieces.
Looking forward to seeing some real old friends there too, either at the PV or weekend, and meeting some new ones I hope as well!
Remember to get your free tickets http://www.parallaxaf.co/tickets.html for Saturday or Sunday.
RSVP’s for the PV were due today 🙂
See you soon!
Well it’s all admin here! Preparing for the Parallax Art Fair in February and some online applications for competitions. Also yesterday planning and preparing for a lovely commission. I’m itching to get some art made really. When I’m rich I will have someone to do all this for me… I hate this sort of organisation.
Check out the News and Events page on my website for more details about the Art Fair and contact me if I don’t have your details to invite you in person. All visitors need a ticket to attend. I will add a link online soon 🙂
