All that remains to say is what a special and unique experience it was to work and create in such an influential place….Jane Austen has been my favourite writer since my A levels many years ago. So you can imagine what a great honour it was to be invited to work there.

Many thanks to Hampshire Cultural Trust, Jane Austen’s House Museum and all the lovely staff and volunteers at Chawton. ❤️

I will be opening my studio as part of Hampshire Open Studios in Fareham on August 26,27,28th if you would like to see some of the peices and sketchbooks in real life. All welcome

The last chilly trips to Jane Austen House Museum, with the review and selection from my time here by Hampshire Cultural Trust and the museum in partnership.

I spread all my things out in the education room ….and a few weeks later a final selection of six works was made. These are intended as merchandising starting points….let you know next week what was selected!

#commission #JaneAusten #ThrowbackThursday #WeeklyBlog @JaneAustenHouse #Hampshire @HantsCulture @RKBurt #OilPaint

Tuesday 7th February… So here I am in action…in the sun!

Whoops – looks like Darren the decorator has inadvertently ‘bombed’ my photo sanding the window inside! ….I’ve edited him out!

Lovely flowery table covering protection for the path too…(which I inherited from Mum – used to be on her kitchen table.) I have to make sure the oils don’t leave any drips on the historic path!!

Blocking in….A fabulously sunny day at last. ..and by lunchtime actually quite warm. I was in only one jumper at one point!!!!

I am working outside today (good colours and tonal contrast) on the views looking into Jane’s writing room (the dining room) where I can see her table and the hearth where she made the breakfast tea. It is strange to know that she sat here in the sun too; watching the world she knew well and writing about it. Very special to look back into where much of her art was created and make some about that myself.

At home in Wales the older rural houses were built and positioned on sites which caught the maximum sun light. This breakfast room has lovely sun and heat from the sun. It can’t be an accident this room was for mornings.

Today I am also waiting for an order of very large paper to arrive from RK Burt!

#commission #JaneAusten #ThrowbackThursday #WeeklyBlog @JaneAustenHouse #Hampshire @HantsCulture #Whistler #DonkeyCarriage #OilPaint

Friday 3rd February.

Earlier start – terrible wet forecast- pessimistic about achieving a full day as I need to work outdoors in oil colour……window cleaners are here too!

The Donkey carriage has been unsettling me. It is sited in a barn – not unrealistic in the way it would have been stored but as it is no longer used or moveable it had little compositional scope. Having drawn it a few times – I am now interested in a watercolour focussing on it’s wheel. (I’ve a few reasons for this…) However – today in oil I am opting for a very simple composition inspired by Whistler’s Mother…except for me the carriage is pointing the wrong way. I’d rather it was right to left. The carriage is sitting on a blank wall. The white wall picks up other reflected colours….but this barn is so dark. I am using a view which is more level and side on than this photo suggests.

APOLOGIES FOR NOT POSTING YESTERDAY – we are still in the throes of a house move 😱

#commission #JaneAusten #ThrowbackThursday #WeeklyBlog @JaneAustenHouse #Hampshire @HantsCulture #watercolour #writing table #OilPaint

Wednesday 1st February!
Wet wet wet!

Where is the sun to help with some good colours and tones? Never mind – table top beckons…

I have three watercolour table tops on the go. Today I wanted to put more, deeper, and some brighter washes with wax resist on to them. It took longer than expected but drying washes takes time. I’m interested in the wax on the surface – also think I need some Gum Arabic in a few washes too. Can’t decide about including or omitting the ink bottle and quill.

Next I worked on the Donkey Cart again. I’ve been doing a measured drawing (sightsize) to work out how it is constructed. It’s a fairly standard (and to me boring ) composition that I have been working on, but working it through; looking at its relationships, mathematical elements, and patterns have given me an idea of where to go with it next. As it has some provenance to connect it directly to Jane Austen (as with the table) I would like to make it part of my final work.
More art materials required too – a significant shopping list of items became necessary today.

A sketch on board – colour far too ….wrong! Can’t think what I mean – but I know it’s wrong.

During the afternoon it dried up enough to begin some of the planned oil pieces (see thumbnail sketches beneath) which I hope to do; looking back into Jane’s working room through the window and including the hearth and kettle. This was a room where the family had breakfast and would make tea. Breakfast was frequently a chore which fell to Jane, and including both the practical and occupational aspect of the room seems appropriate.
I see the weather forecast for Friday is very poor. (wet) – Oil paint (outdoors only in this special and historic setting) will be a challenge.

I use the front and back covers of my Moleskin watercolour sketch books for pencil thumbnails….working out drawings for compositional stuff!!

#Hampshire #panoramic @aspexportsmouth @portsmouthGhall #OilPaint #HMSDaedalus @AberArtSchool

How lucky am I? Being invited to exhibit in a venue with a wall long enough for my 9.5 metre panoramic painting of HMS Daedalus? It hasn’t been exhibited in Hampshire before, or since my first MA exhibition in Aberystwyth School of Art. It is now on view at the Aspex exhibition space at the Guildhall cafe in Portsmouth and can be seen until June 2nd.

Hanging Saturday 11th! I will be exhibiting my 9 metre long panoramic painting of former naval base HMS Daedalus, at the Guildhall cafe in Portsmouth with Aspex Gallery very soon! I’m excited to see it all hung together for the first time since my MA exhibition in Aberystwyth, and to be sharing it with Hampshire for the first time! Come along and take a look! Starting next week till June! Also lots of my other Hampshire work to see too 😊

#commission #JaneAusten #PleinAir @JaneAustenHouse #Hampshire @HantsCulture #OilPaint The best day of last week’s outdoor work – then it got COLD! Excited to be able to share this work one day…. #PleinAir #OilPaint #StCatherine’sHill #Winchester #Hampshire #cold

Looking out from St Catherine’s Hill and the water meadows near Winchester yesterday.

I think ‘medium cold’ would be my assessment if the weather. More blue needed – I think I can hear Marc Dalessio’s voice in my head! The small detail at the top of this post on my website is the more successful part of the longer picture.  I think. Should have just done the trees perhaps.

#sunset #frost #PleinAir #OilPaint #Hampshire #AlverValley @JacksonsArtTalk

Two firsts today – finally got an opportunity to use my new painting box outside, and use the first of my first stretched linen canvases, sealed by my first ever rabbit skin glue mixture!
Another impossibly pretty sunset in this frosty run of weather – had a fun hour trying to catch the colours before the light left.

#Autumn #Rosehips #Goodbye #AlverValley #Hampshire #OilPaint #PleinAir

Two pieces from the Autumn heading off to a new home today. As ever it is both good and a little sad to see things leave; these two particularly, as they helped me developing my understanding about how I should pay more attention to things that just happen to catch my eye.
Although made in the Autumn – the red makes a good profile image for the coming season!

Another stunningly bright day here, with a fabulous blue sky, so I will post this from a similar day earlier this year, and remind you the final of Landscape Artist of the Year is tomorrow at 8pm on @SkyArts. (Or NowTV or TalkTalk) – ps …..I’m a finalist! 😊

#6DaysToGo #LandscapeArtistOfTheYear #wildcard #rosehips #Autumn

Been fiddling round with more of those rose hips….outside and in.

In other news …..there are now only six days to go until my wildcard heat at Stowe!

Here’s a little poem to help you all remember – can’t think where I got the idea from….

“Remember, remember the 15th of November,

When the last Landscape heat is on Sky!”

– perhaps I’ll stick with the visual arts….

#beetroot #dark #OilPaint @LidlUK #PurpleAndRed #LandscapeArtistOfTheYear

It’s an exciting art Tuesday – remember to set your watches for the next Heat episode of Sky’s Landscape Artist of the Year at 8pm!(also on NowTV and TalkTalk)

I’ve been fiddling about with some beetroot. I originally liked the shapes but got very distracted and interested in painting the bright jewel like stems which contrasted so much with the red elastic band! – bought from my favourite grocery shop….

#PleinAir #OilPaint #LeeOnTheSolent #Hampshire #AlverValley

Trying to get to grips with some oil paint again – as the Autumn draws in it becomes harder for water based mediums to dry outside, so it will be oil based stuff for a few months ahead for me out doors when it’s damp – This is my first which didn’t end up so thick that I can scratch into it!

#ThrowbackThursday #UpdatedWebsite KimWhitby.com #TrainToLondon #sketchbook #drawing #trees

I’ve been updating my website and I came across this photo – small quick drawings made from the train, developed in oil paint on cereal box cardboard…..a surprisingly nice thing to paint onto. Of course – not a museum quality surface….but unlikely my work will need to last that long….and its free! Note to self – must do more.

Hello!

I’ve spent the last day (or so) rehanging my work at Ashcroft Arts Centre for my exhibition there. We are now all ready for the first visitors later this afternoon when we open – and the cake is made!

Looking forward to meeting you all later on at the PV. Or call in before 21sr October 😀

It’s going to be the closing day of Hampshire Open Studios 2016 tomorrow, on Bank Holiday Monday.

Here’s a plein air Spring painting of Burseldon Windmill, one of Hampshire Cultural Trust’s properties.

Thank you to all who have travelled to see me, and thanks to Ashcroft Arts Centre and the Hampshire Cultural Trust for hosting me.

NB Last chance to sign your form for a chance to win £100 to spend on art, as part of Open Studios too. We will close at 3pm.

Thank you to all again.

Found a moment to empty my wet painting carrier at last. Here are some things made whilst studying with Marc Dalessio in Wales a couple of weeks ago. The top left two are my favourites – but at the time they were the ones I least enjoyed doing. All good learning experiences on my path towards using oil paint.

How quickly a week can go. Here I am (left) watching a master at work, Marc Dalessio (that’s his arm) and hoping a few specks of magic will land on me. Big thanks to Magda for the photo and all who were there for their great company last week. Best wishes to all.

Fabulous red-pink traffic lights here at the junction in Lee. A view I see often as I come back with our dogs but this time at evening light. I also like the poles breaking up the space in the sky. Maybe an addition to my Spice Island Art Trail show?

I was going to put these on a table but the box held them in such a good pile and has a great subtle pattern.

This is fresh – so it’s not available in Lloyd Motors, Aberaeron – where there are only 9 days left to see my work and shop for original artwork gifts. Christmas is coming!

Contact me via my website contact page if you’d like to buy the pears!

(Pears 3 after MW)

#Pears #StillLife #OilPaint @MichaelW450

 (Pears 1&2, after Michael Weller)

Today I have been staying indoors with some pears. It was quite dull here so I put them on the window ledge. I can see the attraction of the shapes but like most things I have got hung up on too much detail first time round…

#rain #Aberaeron #Last3Days #PleinAir

This is the first time I’ve completely painted an oil painting in the rain! My eye was caught by the yellow leaves and the building.

Great to meet everyone (and have an excuse to pop into the dry) this morning. There are only three more days of the exhibition (closing Monday eve and closed Sunday)  for those of you still planning to come 🙂

#Aberaeron #Wales #Boats #OilPainting

One of my favourite paintings that I will be showing in the Arddangosfa Aberaeron, Lloyd Motors. Boats are such great shapes and I love drawing and painting them. Combine this with the bland, yet complex colours of Autumn, and I could paint this scene many times over.

I will be setting up and hanging today!!!! Come and see it and me….. 23-30th November, in Aberaeron.

See my website for full details!

#Arddangosfa #Wales #Aberaeron #OilPainting #EnPleinAir

I love the grey sky of Autumn – come and see my tree, church and sky picture of Aberaeron soon in Lloyd Motors ‘Showroom’, Aberaeron.

Exhibition 23-30th November – See my website News and Events page for details or call the showroom for opening times- See you there?

I will be there Thursday – Monday 30th., and at the Saturday 21st PV!

#Aberaeron #Wales #Jugs from the dresser in watercolour and oil.

I’ve been busy finishing off for the Aberaeron exhibition recently. These jugs from our Welsh dresser are more successful in watercolour I think. Interesting that as the jugs were hand painted – it translates well into a painting – the marks are already ‘brush shaped’ on the decoration. I think I read/heard somewhere that the houses decoration were often painted by children?

#Aberaeron #Wales Am I the only person doing the same thing lots of times?

Reworking an oil plein air sketch on cardboard, of the beach and harbour wall in Aberaeron, West Wales, on to board.

The view from a similar spot. Isn’t it odd how flat a photo makes everything look? And how lovely and sunny it was – it was actually a very cold morning indeed! I had sketched the wall the day before and had a quick oil paint there the following morning.

‘Rhiwbeth Mixture’….

‘Some sort of mixture’, showing some of the things that I have been plodding on with since  I last posted – sometimes there’s no internet to post as I finish…or I’m in a rush…..or its too dark to photograph…

I’ve been very grateful recently, to watch and follow both Marc Delassio and Peter Brown. Good to see how they tackle their painting via photographic posts and short videos. Thanks guys!

Thinking about Sargent – reds and basket work.

There were some great paintings with red as a key colour in the Singer Sargent exhibition. I was also very taken with the basket work chair, that Robert Lewis Stephenson was painted sitting in. Sargent had really worked to capture the shine and colour with many layers of paint. I need a more yellow element in mine, I think to make it more like the one I was looking at.

Singer Sargent at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Yesterday I was very lucky to see the Sargent exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery. This sketch was much smaller than I had imagined it – only having seen it reproduced in a book. It contained a great deal of sand which must have been incorporated, as it was made on the beach.

I had a great time looking at Sargent’s use of paint, and thoroughly recommend the exhibition if you get the chance.

Replacing Phthalo blue with Prussian blue and trying dark tones.

Today I’ve been looking at tones with Prussian blue to make the darks. I have been using Phthalo blue for some time but although it makes a great dark I dislike the greenish effect it gives in lighter mixes. So far so good. Had a think about reflection too as the front of our microwave is dark glass. The quality of the photos that I’m posting is not so good now we have limited daylight – sorry !
