Thank you @bathsocietyofartists for selecting BOTH my submissions for inclusion in you annual open exhibition 2020! 🥰 I am delighted to be included, (sadly this year for obvious reasons it will be an wholly online exhibition – details of which will follow in another post) – but for today I will just 😊
Anyone fancy learning to do this TOMORROW? I’m teaching @artacademylondon 10.30-4.30. Ideal for beginners and those new to watercolour. Watercolour Taster Workshop. There’s a space or two. Please contact them to book. I cannot take bookings directly. Hope to see you there. #boroughmarket @artacademylondon #london #artacademylondon #watercolour #watercolor #learnsomethingnew #learnwatercolour
Also on the easel AND #stillwet Making this one bigger too and translating it onto stretched linen. Out of context it seems very bright especially on a dull British August day – but you can swipe to see the on-site shots…NW Spain really is these colours!
Original – oil onboard 30x40cms NFS
Enlarged – oil on hand stretched linen 60x82cms PLEASE DM if interested £1750
I took some seriously poor photos whilst I was away. I’m not sure why – possibly the incredible brightness confused the exposure. I’ve made some better photos- with the location shot included and with this one a short film too. I painted this view twice this trip and once last year too. Very breezy each time – so much so that last year it broke my easel. #galicia #mountains #pleinair #lake #spain #anotherwindyday
I sensibly avoided the sun yesterday on the Delme Roundabout in Fareham under the dual carriageway ….I think I might have forgotten how much effort a full Imperial sheet of plein air ink was!….or I’m getting old …or maybe it was just the heat 🥵
Beautiful Dog Daisies are absolutely everywhere this year here in #Hampshire and I have enjoyed grappling with them in the painting, near to home, and on the way to Bath last weekend. I think the way they exist as a mass….and yet have singular identities in the foreground is part of the interest (and challenge) for me. I’m offering it as part of the artist support pledge so if you’d like to remember 2020 #dogdaisytastic summer…. £200 (+p&p) once dry😉 40x30cms Oil on linen board DM if interested please.
This has been living on the chair since I finished it last week. It’s my lockdown still life….all sorts of things which commemorate the lockdown period for me. The coffee pot used as the coffee machine gave up the ghost at the very start ☹️ Sunglasses (mine) worn by our eldest to remember the sun ☀️…and children back at home. 🤔 Scissors – a still life staple of #diebenkorn who I have been revisiting AND from my sewing and crochet activities. The copper planter from my first IGTV posts and Finger Grape handled bag – minus grapes 🎨 My wool bag, with 🇬🇧 to recall VE Day. Packaging tape and paper, and a sample #artistsupportpledge purchase. 🙏 @matthewburrowsstudio Paintings of both dogs….there have been lots of dog walks 🐾 “Bunny-rabbits” in oil – the watercolour version time lapse was my greatest Instagram hit so far! There’s a big pile of box easels all hand me downs (from departed relatives) – I spent a long time selecting a new easel for myself. (It’s suiting me very well 👍) There are lemons too recall the first Instagram Live I did with virtual art fair tour and demo in watercolour. Private Eye …and that might be it… @etta_mac @winsorandnewton #ink @st_cuthberts_mill #saunderswaterford @royaltalensuk @privateeyenews @artistsupportpledge @isolationartschool #isolationart #kimwhitbyart #stilllife #lemons #IGTV #observationaldrawing
WIP Currently working on simplifying shapes and marks in oil – I keep overworking…so painted the dogs (a lot) yesterday and then wiped and repainted the landscape watercolour from Sunday into oil.
When I get a wet paint brush in my hand (with watercolour or ink) my painting process kicks in automatically and the brush becomes an extension of me. I don’t think about whether I am drawing or painting – I think it’s probably somewhere in between. When I pick up a brush with oil on the end it’s as though I’ve never painted before. So much to learn, evolve and develop in my work here – and so very motivating! 🎨😊
A lovely start to my day. Lots of bright sunshine, changing light, loads of colour….got rather carried away with it all and over worked and over detailed it but will be back here again soon to take a less excited look! 🙄 Previously I have done this local subject in ink which is still available in the #artistsupportpledge for (£200 55x75cms sent rolled – DM if interested x )
As part of a sort out (I’m trying to recover a few boards and stretchers for re-use/recycling) I have decided on a few more pictures I will offer for sale. This is one from the Summer painted rapidly en plein air in Arundel. 40x40cms Oil on board Unframed £200 (+p&p) DM if interested. Thank you!
A real blast from the past this #tbt – I’ve spent some time applying for an a-n bursary this morning 🤞 so nothing new to post but here’s a REALLY old thing from during my MA at Aberystwyth Uni. (Thank you iPhone search the date function!) I recall it was at a tutorial review – I can tell by the work it was after I’d scaled back my palette and was heavily into painting fish ….but also where I went. I see Liverpool 😊 Phone photography has also greatly improved 👍 @johnharveyaber @aberystwyth.university #tutorial #fish #liverpool #throwbackthursday @anartistsinfo

The clue is in the name…’water-colour’…A regular phrase I use when teaching…..(Apologies to all I’ve taught/bored saying that!😉) Here are some suitably ‘wet’ watercolours made in Oxfordshire with Royal Talens watercolour which so suits the weather conditions this Spring! (They are transplanted into my mini watercolour travel palette) Thank you @royaltalensuk for the mention in your post on Instagram. I have really noticed the difference in the quality of pigment in your paints which compliments my treatment of watercolour here where the separation of the colour, in the water, is all part of the process. (You can see that separation in the detail shots further on in the post). #pleinair @britpleinair #watercolour #watercolor #Oxford #Oxfordshire #fields #flood #wetfields
EVEN FASTER THAN THIS CLIP! Credit where credit’s due…Thank you to @barclaysuk 👍 Yesterday I found my flight to Dublin to teach @schoolhouseforart #ink on #Flybe was worthless. 🙁 Within 12 hours of reporting this Debit card booking to Barclays- the whole sum was recovered and back in my account! 😊 Before my bedtime! I am now booked to fly with another airline ☘️ I had thought I was only covered in this manner with a credit card booking. Thank you Said for your 📞 help! If you’d like to join me search @schoolhouseforart 21-22-23-24th March
Hello! And a massive thank you 🙏 to everyone who made the effort to visit me in Bath this weekend. ❤️ A special message of gratitude to my new collectors. Please do remember to send a photo once hung. I love seeing my work in it’s new home 🎨 Your support is invaluable and greatly appreciated. ❤️
It’s been a hectic few days since as well with Lymington teaching on Monday @stbarbemuseum ( and a trip to Oxfordshire today! but more about that another time!) Here’s an in-action #ink video or two from the fair. Yes….I always work in a dress and earrings 😉 Fab to catch up with artist friends, make new artist friends and share in their camaraderie. Thanks to all @bathartfair too of course🙏 and thanks @nancychambersart for the camera work 😉
A recently gifted photo of me setting up in #thecircusbath with the final results displayed @bathartfair. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME TO LAST EVENINGS PV AND OPENING. Looking forward to meeting you if you are visiting today!
Remember this one?? Well I thought I’d use it on some new business cards…which have arrived and I’m super pleased with them! Also put the tiny original in a frame for @bathartfair – I’m ONLY taking original artwork. Not really a fan of prints. If you want to hang some thing on your wall that is unique and original then head along to visit. PV tomorrow 6-9pm. All day Sat and Sun. DM me for tickets 😉
A little taste of today’s short course; how to use ink and develop your control of wet-on-paper mediums. Plus a short video shot of my paint brushes on the illuminated signage about adult workshops outside👍 #tone #pattern #ink #shapeandspace #composition @stbarbemuseum We fixed a few more dates today so if you’d like to join me watch out for the new “What’s On” for St Barbe Gallery and Museum in Lymington coming soon. 😊
Time to get excited! My teaching trip to Ireland is confirmed and flight 🛩booked. Ireland here I come! 🇮🇪 I’m delighted to be heading to another beautiful part of the world. These images are from my personal Scottish adventure last Spring. This Spring I will be heading to The School House for Art, just outside of Dublin to teach two 2 day Ink Workshops. 21/22nd March and 23/24th March (or the courses are complimentary and you can do both) Some will be studio work but we hope to also work outside 🤞for good weather. There are a few places left so don’t wait too long if you were hoping to join us as well. Booking with @schoolhouseforart 🎨
The scale of these natural shapes beside these architectural ones is imposing. Even on the brightest Winter days, wet works on paper refuse to dry outside – and our current weather is less than helpful – so some finishing off indoors in necessary. #pleinair #ink #sketch #watercolour #georgianarchitecture #thecircusbath #Bath #londonplanetree @bathartfair @britpleinair @winsorandnewton @moleskine @royaltalensuk
I always enjoy #tbt so here goes…last year I spent some time painting on the Isle of Skye. I wanted very much to work near the Old Man of Storr and walked up twice to try to do so; the first day I was driven off by awful hail (and 100% soaked) and the next day despite having set off in sun I was suddenly enveloped in snow. I did manage a plein air grubby glove sketch with pencil on paper but it was safer to get down off the hill. Recently I used the sketch, video and my memory of the atmosphere to paint this ink #theisleofskye #ink #Scotland #throwbackthursday #oldmanofstorr #pleinair @schoolhouseforart @bathartfair @paintersonline @winsorandnewton @britpleinair #snow #mountains
I really do like scale! Here are two weeny oil sketches from the end of my trip to Bath yesterday (A6) ….and an A3 double page pencil drawing from the start of my day. So much to now complete …. @bathartfair DM for detail and tickets if you’d like to come along. #Thecircusbath @britpleinair #pleinair #somerset #Bath #londonplanetree #georgianarchitecture @seawhiteofbrighton @royaltalensuk
A bit late in the day (-after a busy trip to Bath to work today!) but here’s a #tbt post ….here I am 3 years ago at @janeaustenshouse museum working on my joint JAHM and @hantsculture commission. A very similar day as today as far as weather goes; cold but the first hint of Spring warmth in the sun later on. AND …I am excited to tell you I’ve been back there this year too and as of this week you can now buy some original artwork of Jane’s home by me, in their gift shop. Thank you JAHM and see you again for more painting in the Spring 💐 #janeausten #chawton #Hampshire #ink #watercolour @royaltalensuk @bathartfair
I’ve been really enjoying my drawing recently. No exciting change in subject matter but that’s good for me… “can you just stay in one place for a while!” was an instruction during my MA ….like lots of you guys I suspect we are interested in so much subject matter we easily get distracted? So much to paint – so little time! Here’s a couple of small ones and a video of the other day’s post as it rather bleached out ….my editing no doubt!
This winter has been consistently wet, which makes outdoor working on paper challenging. Both because rain washes away the picture AND because the air is too humid to dry out washes before you can rework an area. Here are a few December sketches from an indoor refuge and a big window to look at the outside from inside!….bright sun and bare branches….cheating a bit but I’m sure you won’t tell anyone 🤫😉
Time is a strange thing…when I made these sketches I was very unhappy with them. Whilst having a tidy up (-yes it does happen occasionally) I rediscovered them. And now I like them a bit more. Perhaps it’s because I’m away from the subject and it reminds me of being there? Or maybe it’s because I’ve been drawing lots recently and these feel more like drawing?…either way. I’m daring to post them! 😬
Here I am breaking radio silence after my social media ‘rest’ with recent sketches in Bath! I’m excited to be working there when possible as I prepare for @bathartfair in just over a month’s time. Aren’t the colours on the London Plane Tree trunks striking? Winter weather is never ideal for watercolour – even during a sunny periods it takes an age to dry….and before the sun came out this day the rain was less than helpful as you can see on the video 😕 – although I do quite like the pattern it leaves behind.
The art fair is Feb 28th 29th and 1st March. If you fancy it DM me for details 😉
Called in to see a friend in Aberaeron and had a lovely surprise to find my picture from a couple of years ago, on her very smart and newly refurbished office wall!!!! Luckily we were both dressed to match decor too 😉
OPEN STUDIO TODAY and TOMORROW in East Street Fareham PO16 0BW
(10-5pm and 11-5pm respectively)
Well when I did the first #HampshireOpenStudios I did from this house, I asked visitors how they knew the event was on! Amazingly over 50% said “we just came in because we saw balloons” – and from that I decided to put balloons out the following Winter …and now this is my third year!
A WARM WELCOME TO ALL…please tell your friends too.
Here are photos of the preparations, small works(£25 up) Christmassy bits and news about my upcoming 2020 teaching, for those of you who don’t get my news letter!😊
I’ve also got a few cards and am supporting this years ‘Just a Card’ campaign too. 🎈🎈🎈
Finished the setting up for my Winter weekend Open Studio event yesterday….and made finishing touches to the handmade ‘baubles’ in the video….which turned out to be very popular last year! I’ve lots of random behind the scene things to add to MyStory later….
Saturday 30th November 10-5pm and Sunday 1st December 11-5pm 2019.
It’s already a bit of a tradition that I do a rather ad hock #WIP 🎨Winter Open Studio …by putting out some 🎈 🎈🎈🎈and opening the🚪 here in Fareham! PO16 OBW
And I’m delighted to confirm this year’s dates (see above)
LOTS of affordable ORIGINAL art all ready for Burford Craft Fair 🎄in a couple of weeks…but if you can get to here this weekend you get first dibs! 🥳 (prices from £25 and upwards!) As well as my other works and a few seasonal bits and bobs! 🎅
DM if you can’t make the weekend as I can offer PV’s on Thursday 28th Nov (evening by appointment please 😉)
So I’ll be taking a rest from food still life for a while – 🥑🍋🍰but def feel like some larger studies with food await in the future. 🎨They have been great subjects to think about paint with…and fun! I’ll be taking them along to Burford Winter Craft Fair in December🤶🏻 (see details below) and also Bath Art Fair in February. DM for details – (framed works as seen on picture two £45-£280🎁) So why not pop along on December14th and grab an original painting as a gift for a foodie friend?🎄
Exploring Bath with my A3 sketchbook yesterday- enjoyed chatting with the friendly locals (Hi! to all I gave cards to😉)
The first sketch, is one of my all time favourite views in Bath during the Winter; looking through the trees in #thecircusbath
I’ve got new ink work planned as I’ve been lucky to pick up a reserve place @bathartfair in late Feb 😊 (really excited to take part!) and my previous work in Bath is sold. Better get back there with my ink ASAP!
February 28/29/1 March 2020 – Bath Pavilion, North Parade Road, Bath. BA2 4EU -https://www.bathartfair.co.uk
One of the best things about being an artist (once the penny drops) is that you will always be learning, which in turn means you are never bored! I’ve been playing with small paintings recently. Thinking about paint. How it goes on. The things that you can do with watercolour and comparing the same thing in oil paint. Learning more about colour. Learning more about looking. Enjoying the painting journey! Which today will take me out and about with my ink…..
Really delighted to be a tutor in my first teaching outside the UK in 2020!
I’ll be in Ireland in March!! ☘️@schoolhouseforart 🎨Instagram doesn’t do links so please copy and paste – https://www.schoolhouseforart.com/classes/march2020-kimwhitby-inks or message @schoolhouseforart If you’d like to learn what I do with ink ….maybe you could ask Santa if you’d been good enough to come along? 🎅 Or please share with your Irish friends and family who might live a bit closer. I’ve more Hampshire and London teaching coming up in 2020 too, so you’d like to hear all about it and don’t get my MailChimp news letters please DM me. #ink #watercolour #worksonpaper #artireland #observationalart @stbarbemuseum #lymington @theartacademylondon #boroughmarket
It’s the last day of @contemporaryartfairs #Windsor …..and the first time I’ve had chance to post! The event has been hectic with visitors to meet and share my work with. I’ve some very charming new collectors for which I am very grateful….THANK YOU but that means the wall behind me (see here at the PV on Friday) is now having to have new works added! See you later?? 10-5pm.
Painting demo/teaching point from last evening…. I will be in Windsor whilst it is #remembrancesunday this year, 🤞I remember to take the poppies to wear with me whilst I’m getting everything else packed! Oil on board 10×15 cms
Lots of little watercolours and oil sketches that will be coming to Windsor with me next week for Windsor Art Fair…..ideal small gifts….as well as my other work. If you’re planning on coming along please DM me for help. #watercolour #watercolor #oilpainting #stilllife #foodporn #mushrooms #pomegranate #sardine #garlic #fig
It’s choosing day for @contemporaryartfairs #Windsor AND #TBT and whilst digging things out I came across this un-posted one from the fantastic #CatherdralBeach in Spain. This one was made from the steps whilst the tide began to turn, which renders the beach inaccessible again until the next low tide. So here it is at home on the windowsill and a spin round of several mini paintings #watercolour and #oilpainting which I will be taking to next weeks Art Fair…perfect little gifts for the upcoming season of gift giving…I hope!
I’ve been fiddling round with these – started whilst teaching some colour mixing and observation…..but should really be prepping for Windsor Art Fair week Friday 😬🤫 #red #observationart #oilpainting #pomegranate #rembrandtoilpaint @royaltalensuk @contemporaryartfairs

I’ve been having fun painting, wiping, repainting these between visitors and heavy showers 🌧 the last two days…might wipe this too. The colours are better and I love the sprouting shapes but the florets are making me cross!

This picture says it all – probably my busiest Hampshire Open Studios days ever for me yesterday. This is my 6th year. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME. I was too busy hosting to paint!
The flowers were a bit dead yesterday, I wonder if I’ll get anywhere near finishing it today before they completely die, or whether I’ll be wiping the board as a failure. 🤞It’s a failure and I have lots more guests today 😊THIS YEAR I have the option to buy a PRINT of my work if the original out of range. They are pre order-able….so ask me more when you come! ☕️🚽August 18-22nd. 10-5pm NB 11-8pm on 22nd. East Street in Fareham.
