Malvern has a huge number of mature trees. Those Victorians were very forward thinking about planting trees. Many gardens boast a beautiful mature tree! So lots of spare subjects to paint another day…
This is a tree in the Priory graveyard in the town centre.
My first oil in town itself.

I had to tweak the canopy as it wasn’t depicting the thinness of the leaf cover originally. I’m happier with it now 🖤

I have to thank my ‘plein air’ students for this one! 🙏
(and another that I will post at another time)
Why? 🤔
Well ….I often paint as demonstration when I teach, but with today’s plein air group, it is less formal teaching and more mentoring, and as such I spend lots of time talking with my students and helping them to draw and paint.
To draw and paint well you must learn to look. 👀
So today, as last time, we looked. 👀We looked at The Malvern Common behind the house. 👀 We looked at the trees. We mixed and matched colour and we looked for tone. 👀
I didn’t paint. But I did look! Which is all part of the process and process is a big part of art practice. Finished artworks grow out of process.
Anyway…I think I looked so hard with my students in the morning, that I couldn’t wait to get these paintings down in the afternoon!
They just fell out! Painted themselves!
So thank you Plein Air Group! See you next week. 🖤

🎨 A lovely day of teaching yesterday for a private group.

We learnt very practical colour mixing theory and progressed into mixing colour to paint fruits and vegetables in primary and secondary colours using complimentary colours to moderate and manipulate them!
